About Huffy Bike Co. - BMX Profile and History

Huffy BMX: A Legacy of Fun, Freestyle, and Forward Motion

If you've ever pedaled through your childhood on a bike that felt like freedom itself, chances are Huffy had something to do with it. With over 130 years of history, Huffy isn't just a brand—it’s a rite of passage for generations of riders. From humble beginnings to Olympic podiums and skatepark sponsorships, Huffy's journey through the BMX world is one worth celebrating.

Origins: From Sewing Machines to Spokes

The story begins in 1892 in Dayton, Ohio, when George Huffman, owner of the Davis Sewing Machine Company, saw the bicycle craze sweeping America and decided to pivot. That decision sparked a revolution in personal transportation and recreation. By 1924, the company had evolved into Huffman Manufacturing, and by 1953, the name "Huffy" was officially born—marking the start of a brand that would become synonymous with fun on two wheels.

What Made Huffy Famous?

Huffy is notable for pioneering innovations that made biking accessible and exciting for all ages. In 1949, they introduced the world’s first training wheels with the Convertible Bike, helping countless kids learn to ride. Their bikes weren’t just functional—they were fun. From battery-powered radios on bikes in the '50s to groovy BMX rides in the '60s and '70s, Huffy always had its finger on the pulse of youth culture.

In 1984, Huffy bikes were ridden by Olympic cyclists who took home gold medals, cementing the brand’s reputation for performance as well as play. Their Green Machine, a drift trike that became a cult classic, re-launched in the 2000s and sold over a million units by 2012.

Sponsorships and Star Power

Huffy has long supported riders who embody the spirit of BMX. Their current roster includes elite athletes like:

  • Nick Bruce – 2020 Olympian and pro freestyle BMX rider

  • Nic Long – Two-time Olympian and Vet Pro BMX racer

  • Carly Kane – Ranked #6 in the world for BMX racing

  • Jacob Thiem – California-based freestyle rider

  • Huck Kurinsky – Junior freestyle rider and 3X national champion

These riders represent Huffy’s commitment to both freestyle and race BMX, inspiring new generations to take up the sport.

What’s Huffy Up to Now?

Today, Huffy is doubling down on its BMX roots. In 2024, they officially reentered the BMX scene with a fresh product line and a renewed focus on freestyle and race disciplines. Their headquarters in Miamisburg, Ohio, recently hosted the entire BMX team to celebrate this new chapter.

In the UK, Huffy has partnered with Adrenaline Alley, one of Europe’s largest indoor skateparks, to support rider progression and make action sports more accessible. This collaboration reflects Huffy’s global vision: to empower riders of all levels, from beginners to pros, and to build inclusive communities around BMX.
