About Proper Bike Co. - BMX Profile and History

Proper Bike Co: A British BMX Legacy

In the world of BMX, few names evoke the same sense of authenticity and dedication to quality as Proper Bike Co. Born from the gritty streets and skateparks of the UK, this brand has carved out a reputation for building durable, stylish, and rider-focused BMX components that have stood the test of time.

Origins: Where It All Began

Proper Bike Co was founded in 2002 by Carlo Griggs, a well-known figure in the British BMX scene. Griggs, who had already made his mark through his involvement with the brand Seventies Distribution, launched Proper with a clear vision: to create BMX parts that riders could trust, both in performance and design. Based in the UK, Proper quickly became a staple in the BMX community, offering a range of components that reflected the needs and feedback of real riders.

What Made Proper Stand Out

From the outset, Proper Bike Co focused on producing high-quality BMX parts rather than complete bikes. Their catalog included everything from forks, bars, and stems to hubs, rims, sprockets, and brakes. One of their standout products was the BSH frame—short for “Brick Shit House”—a rugged street frame that became iconic for its strength and versatility. The BSH v2 followed, refining the original design while maintaining its reputation for toughness.

Proper’s attention to detail and commitment to rider input helped them develop parts that weren’t just functional but also stylish and lightweight. Their Microlite hubs and rims, for example, were praised for their sleek design and performance, making them a favorite among street and park riders alike.

Sponsorships and Team Riders

Proper Bike Co didn’t just make parts—they supported the scene. Over the years, they sponsored a solid lineup of UK riders, including Sam Cunningham, James Curry, Dan Figg, Jordan Godwin, Jamie Guile, Josh James, Shaun Jinks, Sean Kelly, and Mike Miller. They also backed Latvian rider Janis Cunculis, showcasing their commitment to international talent.

These riders helped elevate the brand’s profile, appearing in videos, competitions, and magazine features that highlighted Proper’s gear in action. The sponsorships weren’t just about marketing—they were about building a community and supporting the culture that BMX thrives on.
